So DC Comics announced they are going to have an iconic character” revealed to be gay (Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern) and over at Marvel they are having the X-Men B-lister Northstar marry his boyfriend in a super special gay wedding issue that was talked about on The View.
Remember when those moves would have been considered cutting edge? Now it’s banal. Worse, it’s calculated PR. Superheroes being gay is the new superheroes dying. Once Archie comics created a regular openly gay character it officially stopped being a challenge to the status quo.
But apparently Parent Groups For Worrying About Dumb Stuff still exist in this country and one such outfit, One Million Moms, has been raising a fuss over gay superheroes gaying up their kids with their gay-ma rays. I’ve seen no evidence this group actually has any ability to do anything other than generate blog posts mocking them, but on their poorly designed website they write:
Children desire to be just like superheroes. Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible. Can you imagine little boys saying, “I want a boyfriend or husband like X-Men?”
This is ridiculous! Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models?
And… yeah, why even bother rebutting that? When I was writing the cartoon I actually spoke the words I say in the comic and decided to do it like that. Because they lost.
