It’s tenth anniversaries on down the line–Afghanistan, Iraq, wiretapping, Gitmo. Grab your party hats! As we approach the tenth year of us occupying a foreign country, it occurred to me that people don’t really know all that much about the place. What’s everybody been doing the last ten years?
This comic was inspired by a poll showing most Afghans don’t know what “this event which the foreigners call 9/11” is.
According to a survey of 15- to 30-year-old men in the two southern provinces where President Barack Obama sent the bulk of American surge troops, 92% of respondents said they didn’t know… after being read a three-paragraph description of the attacks.
While we probably find their lack of awareness about 9/11 appalling to our sense of self-importance, I don’t doubt for a minute that many of my countrymen would have trouble singling out West Virginia from two countries we recently invaded.
