The Catholic church is ushered into the 21st century… technologically but not ideologically.
I went to one Catholic confession and one only, when I was about 8 years old. I was asked what I wanted to confess” but nothing came to mind. The priest tried to help me along, suggesting that maybe there was some area of my life where I was falling short of God’s ideal. Had I not honored my father and mother? Stolen anything? Well, sure, but the only thing that I could come up with was that I should be a nicer big brother and share the Nintendo more. The priest said that, yes, I should share the Nintendo more and we did a little prayer about Nintendo sharing, he and I, to the creator of the universe.
I remember being completely baffled as to why this exchange was taking place between a child and a strange adult–or what kind of God would want it to. Those kind of thoughts kept growing and by the time I was twelve I considered myself an atheist, though I didn’t confess it to any adults for quite a while.”
